Sloppy Giuseppes are the Italian cousin of traditional sloppy joes. Pile some saucy Italian meatball crumbles on a hoagie roll along with some mozzarella or provolone. Pop it under a broiler until the cheese is melted and you have a winner of a sandwich.
Sloppy giuseppes are versatile and easy to prepare. They are great for lunch or dinner. You can down size them by preparing them on slider buns and serve them up as an appetizer. They are a great addition to a game day spread or tailgate party.
Please see the recipe card below for exact amounts and directions.
Ingredient Round Up
- Italian meatball crumbles
- Rolls of your choice – I used a Schmidt 647 low carb hoagie roll. Low carb or keto hamburger or hotdog buns will work as well. If points aren’t an issue, then regular ciabatta, hard or hoagie rolls are the best.
- Kraft fat free shredded mozzarella or reduced fat provolone
- Tomato sauce of your choice – I used no sugar added Prego.
Sodium Alert: The sodium in this recipe is high with the bulk coming from the hoagie roll. Using a Schmidt 647 sandwich roll will reduce sodium by 250 mg. Boars Head makes a reduced sodium provolone and Frances Rinaldi makes a no salted added tomato sauce. Check the ‘Low Sodium/No Salt’ product list under ‘Resources’ in the top menu bar.
Making the Sloppy Giuseppes
- Line a baking tray with some foil and place a roll of your choice on it.
- Pile the meatball crumbles on the roll and add some extra tomato sauce.

- Sprinkle shredded fat free mozzarella over the crumbles and sauce. If you choose to use a slice of reduced fat or ultra thin provolone, break it in half and arrange it on top of the meat. (Remember to add the extra points.)

- Pop the sloppy giuseppe under the broil until the cheese is melted and the roll slightly toasted. Serve and enjoy.
Serving Ideas
- These sandwiches are a hit with kids and can be served at play dates or birthday parties.
- On game day sloppy giuseppes can be served as the main attraction.
- The giuseppes can be made on slider buns and served as an appetizer at a party or social gathering.
- And of course they can be served for lunch with some fruit or dinner with a salad or some other vegetable.
